Current Research

I am currently working on semantic-based search engines for both textual and multimedia data. This research aims to integrate a number of concepts such as

  • Semantic Web
  • Natural Language Understanding
  • Reasoning
  • Automatic Labelling
  • Speech Recognition
  • Indexing

in order to come up with a flexible search engine which has the ability to understand user's query rather than merely search for keywords.

The approach to create such system is based on using fuzzy logic as the reasoning logic and common knowledge databases such as Wikipedia as the knowledge base.

I am also trying to use the semantic web standards such as RDF/OWL so the knowledge base would be flexible enough to be able to encompass any web data which follows a certain format or provides semantic information along with regular data.

Other Research Interests

Beside my current research, I have always been interested in a number of other fields which I have worked on time to time and have acquired experience in. I am still working on some of these fields as they are the fundamentals of my current research such as fuzzy logic and soft computing techniques. Some of these fields are:

    • Image Processing
    • Computer Vision
    • Fuzzy Logic Systems
    • Soft Computing
    • Machine Learning
    • Artificial Life
    • Simulation Systems

Past Activities

Fuzzy Pattern Recognition

Pattern recognition is popular among many researchers in the world. Fusing it with fuzzy logic is not, on the other hand, something that everyone spends times on. Working on my master's degree, I and my fellow lab members believed that using fuzzy modeling and/or fuzzy inference can boost up speed, results, and resistance to noise in pattern recognition. I actually did show that idea in the field of speech recognition by presenting a new approach to design a system which could recognize separate words with high resistance to noise and desirable results.

RoboCup Games

I was a member of RoboCup team of Iran University of Science and Technology in 2003 and my undergraduate research was to design an analyzer/visualizer software to present a RoboCup simulation game and extract useful data as well as intelligently do the commentary of the game. The project went smoothly and we won in the RoboCup World Cup 2003 event. I was also helping the other members in Coach League and we could win two other awards in American Open 2003 and World Cup 2003.
